Charlotte Round II
As the headline suggests, we got Charlotte out again this morning. I finally weighed her. She comes in at a little over 50# - heavier than I originally anticipated. Knowing her weight is a mixed bag. On the one hand, I can say “She’s only 50#. Pick it up!” to myself as a bit of a motivator. On the other hand, after 12 of 15 scheduled squats, my quads are getting tight, and I think to myself, “She’s only 50# you weakling. What the hell are you struggling about?”
Cuts both ways.
New Blood
Had a new guy come out today. He’s a fella from work. We’ll call him ‘T’ (so he doesn’t have to actually admit, in public, he joined us.)
Good guy, reasonably fit. Gave it his all. Almost lost his breakfast at one point - that would have been a first - but held on for the duration. Seemed to get along with drinkin’ buddy/neighbor/workout partner just fine. I hope he joins us again.
- 2x Zercher Carry 100m Relay
- Start with P1 & P3 on one end and P2 on other end of 100m.
- Kettlebell on each end. Charlotte on the end w/ two people.
- In one round everyone does:
- 2×100m Pipe Carries
- 2 sets of 25x Swings
- 2 sets of rest
-
- Round 1
- P1: Zercher Carry 100m to P2
- P2: Rest
- P3: 25x 16kg KB Swings
- Round 2
- P1: 25x KB Swing
- P2: Zercher Carry 100m to P3
- P3: Rest
- Round 3
- P1: Rest
- P2: 15x Push Ups
- P3: Zercher Carry 100m to P1
- Continue in that manner until everyone’s back in their starting places.
- We did two full rotations.
- 2x (Tag Team Style)
- P1: 10x (5x ex. arm) KB Get Ups
- P2: 15x Zercher Squats w/ Charlotte then hold until P1 is finished.
- P3: Hold 16kg KB overhead. Switch arms when P1 switches arms.
T had never done TGUs before, so was super slow and careful. I struggled holding Charlotte. T’s second round, thankfully, was a bit quicker. =)
- 3x (a Tail Pipe Variation)
- P1: 400m run
- P2: Hold w/ Charlotte in Back Squat position for duration of run
- P3: 2 16kg KBs held in front rack position for duration of run
- Rotate, everyone gets a turn.
Then we played around a bit, KB windmills, bottoms-up presses, etc.
I finally got Charlotte overhead! Once from behind the neck and once from the front. From the front, I sorta continental’d it up to a front rack, got my hands out to a good, wide base, squeezed everything and pushed. It worked! Held it over head for several seconds.
Taught T the KB Snatch. He caught on to the groove very quickly. I think he would make a fine addition to the Wednesday morning ritual.
Punk Rock Girl
Showered, got dressed, drove to work. Just as I was pulling into the parking garage, the local “alternative rock station” played “Punk Rock Girl” by Dead Milkmen.
Awesome! I was about 5 minutes late in because I sat in the parking garage, singing along.
I hope all those kids out there who listen to their formulaic ‘alternative rock’ were listening this morning, and now know the real alternative.

I fucking love that song.
Oh and if they don’t know mojo nixon they sure could use some fixin.
As I was telling JB, you guys have inspired two of my good friends to develop a similar workout routine. One is even constructing his own Charlotte, although he’ll probably give it a different name. Sweet.
Very cool.
Keep me up-to-date what they’re doing. Website, pictures, anything really. I’m interested to see if this helps others as much as it has me.
