…but first, a bit of my last several days.
New Year’s Eve
My wife and I, and five other couples went out to eat to a fantastic Italian place. We go there (the six couples) every New Year’s Eve night.
After dinner we came home, put the kids to bed and played backgammon until about 11:00 or so when we decided we had no good reason to stay up - and our kids were going to be up at 6:00 regardless how early or late we stayed up - and just went to bed.
We’re getting old. ~shrug~
New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day we went over to my in-laws’ place. Watched Missouri pummel Arkansas and Tony Temple set a new Cotton Bowl rushing yards record. Ate some traditional and not traditional New Year’s Day foods. Drank some beer.
Not a bad day. Very quiet compared to the rest of the holiday season. That makes me happy.
Squats and More Squats
Figuring all the crazies were going to be in today, I planned a workout that required exactly one power rack. I figured my normal 5:00 starting time would just beat the newbies. I could claim the power rack and just do my think for as long as I needed.
Turns out, the crazies didn’t show today. Maybe it was too cold. Maybe they’ll start on Friday. Or Monday. Or maybe they all went to Club Fitness.
All I know is that they weren’t at the Y this morning.
- Warm Up
- 5x Overhead Squat @ 45#
- 5x Overhead Squat @ 100#
- 10x Overhead Squat @ 100#
- Little More Warm Up
- 3×5 Back Squat @ 145#
- 3×3 Back Squat @ 175#
- Work
- 3×3 Back Squat @ 205#
- 3×3 Back Squat @ 230#
- 2×2 Back Squat @ 250#
- 1×2 Back Squat @ 265#
I did some pull ups - ladder style - between each set of squats, coming to a total of 48 pull ups. Made sure to do the last of each set with a very slow negative.
Lactic Acid Tolerance
I’ve mentioned before in March I’ll be Mastering the Met - a 42 flight stair climb for charity. I really need to get my lactic acid tolerance up for the challenge.
- 16kg KB Snatches
- ladders, every minute, on the minute, 12 minutes
- 20x (10x ea. arm)
- 18x (9x ea. arm)
- 16x (8x ea. arm)
- 14x (7x ea. arm)
- 20x (10x ea. arm)
- 18x (9x ea. arm)
- 16x (8x ea. arm)
- 14x (7x ea. arm)
- 20x (10x ea. arm)
- 18x (9x ea. arm)
- 16x (8x ea. arm)
- 14x (7x ea. arm)
For a grand total of 204 Snatches. Not a terribly impressive number for 12 minutes, but after all those squats, I felt pretty much at the end of my abilities.
Cabbage Soup Diet
Finally, in the spirit of New Year’s resolutions, I got in a discussion with someone over the Cabbage Soup Diet. This someone was trying to convince me it is the best weight-loss plan in existence.
Every year - at this time - he goes on the cabbage soup diet. He, indeed, loses 20-30 lbs (6-10% BW) in 2 or 3 weeks. He counts it as a great victory every year…and weighs more each Christmas than he did the previous year.
What kind of great victory is limited to 3 weeks/year?
