There were two newbies in the weight room this morning. They both did three or four sets of leg presses and left. We’ll see if they’ll be back.

Part of me wants to scream at those people, “Stop! Come over here. Let me show you how to squat and deadlift. I know it looks scary, but you can do it. We’ll start slow.”

…and then I realize they’d think I was a nut. I am, I mean. I just don’t want them to think it - yet.

It’s just a damn shame to see some good intentions - getting fit - go bad. And there’s nothing I can do about it.

I would not lead you into this promised land if I could, because if I could lead you in, someone else could lead you out.

So true. I just grunted through my squats and eventually the interlopers left. I’m not sure if I want them to come back Wednesday. Not that I have much of a say in it.

Maybe they need PowerThirst.

I wrestle with the same sorts of things at the gym. Mostly when I see people on the verge of crippling themselves with Deads. My jaw drops sometimes when these guys finish a set and I note that they can still walk.

Granted, my technique isn’t perfect…but I can spot dangerously bad form pretty well.

    What do you do though?

Sometimes I see someone around the gym, and I can tell they know what they are doing. If one of those folks stopped me after a set and said, “Hey man, you’d do better to make *these changes* to your technique–it’ll give you a better lift and make you less likely to hurt yourself,” I would say, “Thanks, my name is Jesse–could you explain a little more why and maybe show me?”

But then some people would be like “I’ve been doing this since high school, you’re straining to pull 250#, get out of my face.”

I guess if you were really interested in affecting someone else’s routine, you *could* try to make friends with them first, then give suggestions later. But that’s so much effort just to be a good Samaritan…and really…who has time for more friends?

Yeah. I guess the best anyone can do is simply be a good exhibitor of good form and good exercise choices and be open to conversation. If someone wants to ask, they will.

If not, it’s none of my business.

I had a lady ask me once why I took my shoes off when I deadlifted. I told her. She seemed reasonably interested - though I’ve never seen her deadlift.

I barely have time for the workout I have planned. I surely don’t have time to be anyone’s personal trainer.
