Deserves a Beating

6:25AM 30 January 2008

Marathoner:
Whoever made up that workout needs a beating.
CES:
~pant pant pant ouch pant~
…to be continued…

What the hell was I thinking?

Warm Up
10x Overhead Squats @ 45#
12x Pull Ups @ BW
10x Overhead Squats @ 95#
10x Pull Ups @ BW
15x Overhead Squats @ 115#
5x Pull Ups + 5x Chin Ups @ BW
More Warm Up
5x Back Squat @ 135#
5x Back Squat @ 185#

My legs weren’t feeling 100%, but not bad. That would all change very quickly.

Work
20x Back Squat @ ~75% 1RM
Take as much time as you need between reps, but don’t put the bar down.
The only reason to quit is falling on your face and having the spotter deadlift the weight from your head.
My load was 225#

Reps 1-5 went very well. Stopped, took about 3 breaths. Reps 5-10 were a little tougher…really struggling. Another 3 breaths. 10-15 were done as a double, then three breaths, then another double, three breaths, then a single. Five breaths and some good positive talk later, rep 16 began.

Internal Dialog

Rep 16
Come on now. Just a single. 225#
Three breaths. Fill that belly up with air. Remember to sit back…
Rep 17
I better stand up with this. If I fail, Marathoner has to pull this bar off of me.
Three breaths. Fill that belly up with air. Remember to sit back…
Rep 18
I’m going to f*’n die.
Seriously. My legs are going to explode.
Three breaths. Fill that belly up with air. Remember to sit back…
Rep 19
How did I do that? If I can do 18 I can do 19.
Three breaths. Fill that belly up with air. Remember to sit back…
Rep 20
Alright. One more left. One single. Down and up and you’re done.
Tight. Stay tight. Look up.
UP!!!

I did it, racked the bar and collapsed. My shorts rode up a bit to show the tattoo on my thigh.

Marathoner:
What’s that?
CES:
It’s a tattoo.
Marathoner:
Have you always had that tattoo?
CES:
I wasn’t born with it, if that’s what you mean.
Marathoner:
Good point.

Next round, working on deadlifts.

3x
8x Speed Pulls @ 185# +
8x RDL @ 185# +
8x Snatch-Grip DL @ 185#

There was minimal rest between three different exercises, and plenty of rest between each group of sets. It kicked my ass - quite literally. Everything from the tops of my knees to the bottom of my rib cage was unbearably sore for 30 min. after I got finished.

Tomorrow morning is going to be terrible. I already dread getting out of bed.

You are such a smart-ass. But today’s blog post made me laugh out loud. Luckily my office mates are used to that.

    HA!

You ask a silly question, you get a silly answer. I’m just amazed I still had my wits about me at the time. I felt like I was going to pass out.

Sorry. Not much time today for a proper post, but I will give a status update here.

My legs weren’t half-bad this morning.
My hammies were a little tight, but nothing that a hot shower and some moderate stretching throughout the day couldn’t take care of.

My traps, on the other hand, are extremely sore. Even now - some 40 hours later - and my traps are very tight and sore. I’ve tried all day long to get them to loosen up. No luck.

Pull ups tomorrow morning are going to not be fun.
