…but first.
Master the Met
I’ve augmented my training lately to focus a bit more on muscular endurance and lactic acid tolerance. As mentioned before, I’m participating in a fund raiser called Master the Met.
It’s a race up 42 flights of stairs - collecting money for the American Lung Association. (One of my co-workers has a theory that this really isn’t about fund raising. He thinks it’s a test. Only the healthy lungs will make it to the top…where one will suddenly smell ether, and those healthy lungs will be harvested.) Let’s hope he’s wrong. =)
Donations from my readers aren’t required, of course, but sure are appreciated. My personal goal is $100, so even $5 or $10 is significant. If you can swing it, thank you.
Now, on to today’s workout. This one is Crossfit-derived, and brutal.
- 21+15+9
- Deadlift @ 225#
- Clean @ 135#
- …for time
That is, 21 pulls, 21 cleans, 15 pulls, 15 cleans, 9 pulls, 9 cleans. Take all the rest you want, but it counts against your time.
I was hoping to do that in under 10 minutes (my goal for the stair climb). I actually did it in just over 11 minutes. Not bad, but could be better.
I was huffing and puffing and my lower back and butt were burning. My t-shirt was pretty sweaty. I’ll admit it, I felt a little ill. But I made it.
The strange part of the whole thing was accommodating the same muscles doing essentially the same thing, at very different speeds. The deadlift is slower. 225# is pretty light, so it went up fast…still, it’s slower than the clean. The clean, on the other hand, is very powerful, fast, explosive. I missed the first clean in the sets of 15 and 9, simply because I didn’t explode. I could have done it, but just didn’t. Mental lapses, perhaps.
Anyway, very tough.
