When I Grow Up

This is the first time I’ve posted twice in one day. Don’t expect it often. In fact, I’d say don’t expect it ever again.
I want to be this guy when I grow up.
OK. Please return to your regularly scheduled day.

Temple of Pain

I saw this article in the gym this morning. Someone had cut it out and hung it on the bulletin board there, surrounded by home-made pull-tab ads for personal trainers and used gym equipment.
As I read it, one of the regulars who was resting between supersets of decline dumbbell curls and calf-raises said, “We should [...]

Good Luck JB

My good friend JB is competing in his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament this weekend. Today, in fact. His first match is at 13:30 California time.
I know he’s been working really hard the last few months to cut weight and get lean, to get fit enough to go hard for 5 minutes, and to learn enough [...]

Power Endurance Challenge

I’ve been thinking lately of creating some sort of virtual challenge for the readers of my humble blog. It’d be nice if we could all gather to one place to see each other, compete, show off a little, eat, drink and be merry.
But that ain’t gonna happen.
A virtual competition might be fun, yes? Most of [...]

That’s a Party

Last night I was at the supermarket. I got in line at the checkout lane and looked up at the fella in line ahead of me. The contents of his cart were:

2 bottles of Jack Daniels
1 12-bottle box of Schlafly Pale Ale
6 big cylinders of oatmeal
2 cartons 1.5 dozen eggs each

Makes me wonder how he’s [...]

Rain Rain Go Away

Though it is Wednesday, training this morning was done indoors. The rain had been falling steadily here for more than 48 hours. Everything (including many people’s basements) is flooded. Whole towns have evacuated. It’s bad news.
Fortunately, the Y was open this morning, just like normal.

1 Weekend, 2 Movies

It’s an amazing weekend when I have time to watch one movie. This weekend I watched two. I know, that doesn’t sound like such a big deal to those of you without children, but it is. And I loved it.
I watched “The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford” and “No Country for [...]

Legends 1430 Is Dead

Thank you for listening. I’m bummed. I wrote about driving around in my father-in-law’s pick up truck, listening to the AM country music station. Ever since then, 1430AM has been one of the programmed spots on my car’s radio. It doesn’t get a daily listen, but it’s there when I need it.
This morning after the [...]

Out of Hibernation

It is a beautiful morning here. The temperature is somewhere in the mid-40s°F. Clear sky. Perfect day to come out from a winter slumber. Charlotte made her way to the field this morning, joined by two kettlebells, DrinkinBuddy/Neighbor, Marathoner, and me.
It was awesome.
The workout this morning wasn’t too vigorous, but just enough to get the [...]

Back to Work

After the race last weekend, I decided to take a week off. Work has been busy and the extra time was appreciated. It gave my body an opportunity to rest a little and an extra hour or so in a warm bed with my wife each morning. Not bad.
But all that is over. Today I’m [...]
