That’s a Party

Last night I was at the supermarket. I got in line at the checkout lane and looked up at the fella in line ahead of me. The contents of his cart were:

  • 2 bottles of Jack Daniels
  • 1 12-bottle box of Schlafly Pale Ale
  • 6 big cylinders of oatmeal
  • 2 cartons 1.5 dozen eggs each

Makes me wonder how he’s feeling this morning.

Workout

Warm Up
1x Power Snatch + 10x Overhead Squat @ 45#, 95#, 115#
10x Overhead Squat @ 135#
Back Squat + Weighted Chins
5x @ 185# + 5x @ BW+20#
5x @ 215# + 5x @ BW+25#
5x @ 255# + 5x @ BW+30#
5x @ 255# + 5x @ BW+30#

Marathoner was with me again this morning. At some point between the sets I asked him if he could squat A2G, no weight, without plates under his heels. He, sorta knee-jerk said, “no”…then tried.

He could!

His back was rounded something wicked - not capable of holding almost any load - but his hips let him at least get that low. That’s a huge improvement from when he started. And, to think, his biggest concern back then (6,7,8 weeks ago?) was bulking and losing flexibility.

Well done, Marathoner. In a couple more weeks we’ll lower the weight and remove the plates during back squats.

Bench Press
5x @ 135#
5x @ 155#
5x @ 185#
5x @ 185#
5x @ 185#

That is a wicked grocery store cart, my friend. Throw in a couple cans of fancy feast and a tin of Altoids, and you’ve got something otherworldly.

Congrats to marathoner on making some progress with the OHS. I always have found that a really tough lift. Has he made headway with the arm lockout/bar lowering as he squats thing?

Just curious to know what might have helped clear up that issue…if it was just experience with the exercise…or otherwise?

    Hope you’re doing well, man.

After a night of Jack and ale a can of Altoids would probably be welcome!

Marathoner was not holding any weight overhead. Just squatting.
We’ve tried overhead squatting with just a broomstick and he still has the same weird arm problem.
I tried suggesting a wider grip. Even that did not help. Still no resolution there, but at least his hips are becoming more flexible.
