At ~4:30 this morning I was awakened by an earthquake that hit about 120 miles east of here. Newspaper says it was 5.2. I felt it shake for several seconds. I’m not really sure, for a few reasons. I woke in the middle of it, and it was 4:30 in the morning.
Didn’t seem to cause any serious damage in the STL. There are some reports that a part of an overpass in The Hill fell onto the highway below. If you’re from around here, one might be tempted to say that’s half the fun of living in South City, not necessarily anything to do with the earthquake. =)
Perhaps not how I would have chosen to wake up this morning, but it was a little different, a little unexpected. Nobody’s hurt. ~shrug~ There are worse ways to be awakened.
Workout
- Power Snatch + Overhead Squat
- 1x + 10x @ 45#
- 1x + 10x @ 70#
- 1x + 10x @ 95#
- 1x + 10x @ 105#
- 1x + 10x @ 120#
- Deadlift
- 5x @ 230#
- 5x @ 270#
- 5x @ 320#
- 5x @ 320#
- 5x @ 320#
- 4x @ 320#
I had intended to do 4 heavy sets @ 320#. 2 of the sets at 5x each and 2 more at 3x each. My second heavy set felt pretty good so I thought I’d stretch my third heavy set to 5x. That was successful. So successful, in fact, I tried to stretch my fourth heavy set to 5x. Rep three was just a little sloppy. Not ‘dangerous’, but not ‘perfect’ either. My back just wasn’t as solid as it should have been. Marathoner was there with me and he didn’t even notice a bend, but I felt it. Just the smallest amount.
Unfortunately, I got greedy and tried to pull one more and kinda tweaked my back. That one not only felt ugly but looked ugly too. I got it up and locked out, but am kinda paying for it now. My spinal erectors are spasming on me a bit and I’m just a little more sore than I should be. Could be worse, but doesn’t feel warm and tingly like it should either.
…and my butt hurts. =(
- Bench Press
- Some warm up @ 135#
- Some more warm up @ 165#
- 3×5 @ 190#

My folks emailed me about the quakes. Crazy stuff. Reminds me of Iben Browing and all that nonsense when we were in highschool.
I’m going to go listen to some uncle tupelo.
Nice work on the pulls.
Oh noes! I could definitely see how it would be tempting to keep pushing on the deadlifts - so much fun! But you have to set a good example for newbies like me. I guess maybe this is your cautionary example.
Yeah.
Funny thing, this quake (and the at least 1 aftershock I’ve felt since) have nothing to do with the relatively “popular” New Madrid Fault. Apparently this is the work of the Wabash Valley Fault.
Ol’ Iben was WAAAAY off. =)
Doc:
“Do as I say, not as I do.” =)
It wasn’t terrible form, just a little greedy. Stupidity should be painful. It was. And is.
I’ll try to remember the lesson next time.
Ouch. Definitely done that one before. Heal up soon.
Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen. And whiskey.
