Yesterday evening I watched the Colts v Redskins Pre-Season Game on the local NBC station. I was watching the game and having a conversation with my daughter at the same time, so I wasn’t totally listening to John Madden. He was talking about an old football player - perhaps one of the fellas just inducted into the Hall of Fame this weekend? - when he said something like,
…once scored nine different ways in one game.
That got my attention. Nine different ways? One man, one game? Wow! So, I started to think of all the possible different ways one can score in an American Football game.
- Rushing touchdown
- Receiving touchdown
- Running back a punt
- Running back a kick-off
- Kicking a field goal
- Kicking a 1-point conversion
- Rushing a 2-point conversion (after 1994, or in the 1960s in the AFL)
- Receiving a 2-point conversion (same as above)
- Running in a fumble recovery
- Running in an interception
- Causing a safety
That’s 11. (I can actually think of one more. 3 extra credit points if you can add one to the list - respond in a comment.)
So, we have 12 ways to score in American Football that I can think of, and this guy, whomever he was, scored in 9 different ways in one game? Amazing. If anyone watched the game last night and knows who it was they were talking about, I’d love to know.
Workout
Marathoner is out of town this week, so I’m on my own.
- 1RM Back Squat & DB Floor Press
- 5x OHS @ 45# / Press @ 50# DBs
- 5x OHS @ 95# / Press @ 55# DBs
- 5x OHS @ 115# / Press @ 60# DBs
- 5x OHS @ 135# / Press @ 65# DBs
- 3x Squat @ 185# / Press @ 70#
- 3x Squat @ 215# / Press @ 70#
- 3x Squat @ 225# / Press @ 75#
- 3x Squat @ 245# / Press @ 75#
- 1x Squat @ 275# / 3x Press @ 80#
- 1x Squat @ 295# / 1x Press @ 85#
- 0x Squat @ 325# / 1x Press @ 85#
I think the 325# was a little aggressive. My planned goal was 320#, but the 295# felt really good so I threw the 5#s on instead of the 2.5#s. It didn’t work out. ~shrug~ Maybe next time. That’s a total squat volume of 5130# and a total press volume of 4860#. Put in those terms, I don’t feel so bad missing the 325#. Not bad for a little less than an hour of work.
Total volume is something I haven’t paid much attention to, but I think I’m going to. I’ve been reading some of Dave Tate’s writing lately. I know his theory and practice of Max Effort and Dynamic Effort days, but never before realized the emphasis he puts on total volume during Max Effort training.
I’ll be making a conscious effort in the future to increase total volume and total volume above 85% 1RM and to notice any effect on growth.
- Pull Ups / Knees-to-Elbows AMAP Combo
- Grab the bar overhead, do as many pull ups as possible followed by as many K2E as possible.
- About 2 minutes rest between each set.
- 10 / 12
- 8 / 12
- 7 / 10

Another good sports trivia question — There are 9 ways to reach first base in baseball. Can you name them?
Let’s see:
1. Single
2. Base on Balls
3. Hit by Pitch
4. Dropped third strike
5. Error
6. Fielder’s Choice
7. Catcher Interference
…that’s the best I can do right now.
Football:
Dropkick is #12, what about throwing a td?
Baseball:
8)fielder obstructs base runner on the way to first.
and I think
9) illegal substance applied to the ball by the pitcher.
3 Extra Credit Points to J.B.
A drop goal was exactly the twelfth I was thinking of.
I counted throwing a touchdown the same as #2 receiving a touchdown. Two sides of the same pass.
Very nice.
9) Batted ball hits baserunner before fielder touches it.
Good job on the rest.
2 outta 3 is good enough for a monday.
