Raw Eggs and a Singing PL Meet

Strike that, reverse it.

The USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals was a few weeks ago in STL. First, USA Powerlifting is very strict on drug testing. Second, a raw meet means extra equipment is limited. This - their first raw national meet - limited lifters to wrist wraps, neoprene knee sleeves and belts. Being a Powerlifting meet, lifters competed in the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. This is the kind of lifting I like - wo/man vs iron, pure and simple.

Results are in. It’s all in metric so you English system fans will have to do conversions. I looked to see how I would have done. Not well, it turns out. I would compete in the 75kg weight class (approx. 165#). My best lifts to date: Squat 143kg; Bench Press 102kg; Deadlift 184kg. That’s a total of 429kg.

You can see from the results that puts me in 8th place of 13. And three of the people I would have beaten were 14, 15 and 71 yrs old. Uh…yeah. Maybe next year.

Yikes, If I sucked down to 90kgs (about a 15 lb suck) I’d still have been.. 20-something. Jesus chrismas.

I have no doubt that if you dedicated your training to focus on PL, you’d make some fools recognize. I think most of us are in the boat of not putting all of our efforts into one sport (or even a handful of lifts as the case would be with PL competition).

I’m a weird blend of cycling and lifting so it’s sort of like apples to corn on the cob, but if *I* lost another few lbs and competed with you in the 75kg class, I’d have been lucky to put up 300kg total without blowing a gasket, putting me @ 11th and only beating the two people who apparently didn’t actually lift.

Even the 14 year old would have toasted me.
