It was absolutely a good morning. The temperature at 5:00 this morning was somewhere around 55°F. The sky was clear, the stars shone brightly and there was the slightest of breezes. There was a part of me that seriously considered just sitting on my front porch for an hour and a half instead of lifting.
But I didn’t. Off to the gym I went. (I did roll down the windows of my car on the drive, getting just a little bit more of that perfect air.)

I set the pins in the power rack at a height between my waist and my hips. All good mornings were started from a dead stop on those pins. I think it would be better to start from the same height, but suspended from chains…but I have no chains and I’m not sure it would be looked upon kindly by the folks at the Y. ~shrug~ The pins work, it’s just slightly more difficult to maneuver the bar into position.
The 205# represents about 65% my 1RM squat. I think that’s a good start.
- Rowing on the Ergometer
- 4x 500m @
I haven’t rowed in a while and I felt it today. My quads got all lactic acid-y pretty quickly and I didn’t let up on the time, so they only got worse. Right after I finished my third 500m - I’m out of breath in a big way, my legs are burning and throbbing, I’m barely holding myself upright - the old man who works there in the “cardio room” comes over to me and leans down.
- Old Man:
- Excuse me, do you know if there’s a resistance setting on this thing?
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant glare pant pant (trying to formulate language)~ I don’t know.
- Old Man:
- There was a guy in here the other day…
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant~ Yeah. I don’t know.
- Old Man:
- …he was trying to figure it out and he asked me if I knew how.
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant~
- Old Man:
- Do you ever push any of these buttons here?
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant~ Yeah. ~pant pant pant~ I set ~pant pant pant~ the distance ~pant pant pant~ and time.
- Old Man:
- Do you ever set the resistance?
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant~ … ~pant pant pant~ No. ~pant pant pant~
- Old Man:
- Well, OK. He was really trying to figure it out.
- Me:
- ~pant pant pant~ … ~pant pant pant~
- Old Man:
- Well…OK then. ~long awkward pause~ OK. Thanks.
Why was this my problem? Could he not see I was in pain? Could it not have waited until after I was finished?
I guess not.
JB? JB’s Wife Kate? Anybody else? Do you know how to set the resistance of the old school (early ’80s model) Concept II I use? Leave a comment. I’ll give the old guy the URL next time I see him. =)
