Sunday morning, Ike came to town and dumped something like 6″ of rain in as many hours. Favorite Drinkin’ Buddy is putting a new addition (…no, not Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny…) on his house. The yard isn’t graded properly yet so all that rain pooled in all the wrong places - including his new basement.
Favorite Drinkin’ Buddy, his father-in-law, and I spent Sunday morning, in Ike’s remains, building a dam around the back side of his house out of mud and about 2 tons of pea gravel. We then dug trenches around the dam to channel the water around the sides of his house to the street.
I came away from that experience with three insights:
- I could have been very successful in the Army Corp of Engineers. My dam-building skills are phenomenal.
- Digging trenches out of clay mud, in pouring hurricane rain, is a Sisyphus-ian task…and very messy.
- Mrs. Favorite Drinkin’ Buddy makes a killer egg and sausage casserole.

I “hate” when people put useless quotation marks around words. This had me laughing out loud. Hilarious.
