*Biker and I have been talking about a potential plan. Codename for now is “The Ghetto Gym”. The idea is to find a small, cheap warehouse space in an industrial sector of town and load it with a couple barbells, 1k# of plates, a squat rack, a few kettlebells, heavy chain, Charlotte, home made medicine balls and sandbags, etc. Old tires and chain for dragging, a big tire for flipping, maybe some concrete-filled tires for carrying around. We’d try to either make or buy used everything in the place - keep it as inexpensive as possible.
We would have to recruit maybe 10-15 people to make the cost reasonable. We could incorporate coop style, certainly non-profit, but enough monthly dues to pay for the place, the lights and the stuff. Just give everybody a key - open 24 hours to member/owners.
The focus would be on getting bigger, faster, stronger. No mirrors, no treadmills, no air conditioning, no MSNBC on the tele…no tele. There would likely be an old boom-box-style radio in the corner playing old Metallica, Public Enemy and the like.
I’m not sure this plan’s going to go anywhere, but it’s fun to imagine. Any suggestions from anyone? Anybody want to add your name to the list of potential new owners of “The Ghetto Gym”?

another option could be to find someone who has a sizeable garage/basement/outbuilding and start from there. Then move up to a warehouse. otherwise you’ll have to have each person put down a decent chunk of “ernest money” to cover first/last, equipment, and the like.
just a thought.
I am lucky in that the boathouse works as my “getto gym.”
I think the Ghetto gym is a fantastic idea! I’d sign up for that! You may have some luck finding the ideal space on craigslist.org
