I’ve been pulling heavy a lot lately, and it’s catching up with me.
Saturday Workout
(…in lieu of Friday morning’s regularly scheduled affair.)
Not much time. My daughter was in a swimming lesson. I had 45 minutes to lift before getting her out of the pool. Must focus on the big things.
- Box Squats
- 7x @ 135#
- 6x @ 175#
- 5x @ 205#
- 4x @ 225#
- 2x @ 245#
- Chin Ups
- 10x @ BW+25#
- Rack Pulls from 3rd Pin Height
- 5x @ 135#
- 3x @ 225#
- 3x @ 315#
- 2x @ 405#
- 4×1 @ 455#
- Chin Ups
- 10x @ BW+25#
- Squats
- 5x @ 225#
- 2×2 @ 295#
I racked my weights, washed the chalk from my hands, stripped off my shoes and socks and headed to the pool deck.
Daddy! Hey Daddy! Look at me!!
~splash~
The instructor was in the deep end, holding one of those rescue pole/hooks so it touched the bottom of the pool. My 5 yr old daughter was doing a little surface dive and “climbing” the pole all the way to the bottom. =)
She’s a little fish. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me at all. Her mother (my wife) and I met at a waterpark. I was a lifeguard, she was a cashier. We both love the water. Those were the days…
Monday’s Workout
- Clean & Press
- 10x @ 115#, 1x every 10 seconds
- 7x @ 135#, 1x every 10 seconds
- 5x @ 155#, 1x every 10 seconds
- 5x @ 155#, 1x every 10 seconds
That has begun to get really hard. My left hip flexor (I know there are 6 of them…I don’t know which one) has been giving me a little trouble lately. That final round of Cleans had it cramping so much I could hardly stand straight.
- Massage
- About 5 minutes of self-administered hard-knuckle-massage on left hip flexors.
- About 5 more minutes of working on my IT band and quads.
- Rack Pulls from 2nd Pin Height
- About 15x of ‘too much too soon’
- 5x @ 135#
- 3x @ 225#
- 3x @ 315#
- 0x @ 405#
- 1x @ 405# w/ Belt
- 0x @ 455# + 1x Valsalva’s Maneuver (ill-advised)
- 3×1 @ 425# Sumo, w/ Belt
- Massage
- About 15 more minutes of massage on my lower back and basically everything between my waist and my knees.
- I hurt.

Did you faint during the Valsalva fail?
Not quite. I grabbed the rack and just laid my shoulder into it. I got pretty light-headed, was just barely aware of my surroundings and couldn’t have stayed balanced on my own…but not quite fainted.
I finally realized that I was pulling heavy when I saw tracers after.
Color me un-surprised that your offspring take to the water.
