My Son Pliés Like a Powerlifter

Friday’s Lost Tooth

Our daughter lost her second tooth on Friday. Her two bottom front teeth are now missing. Her brother kicked out the first one a couple weeks ago. This one came out in a more natural manner. She was so proud.

Saturday’s Pliés/Squats

Saturday was a very busy day. The day started with a predictable visit from the tooth fairy. That was fun.

Saturday morning was a parent observation day at my three-year-old son’s dance studio. They warm up on a ballet barre made of PVC in the center of the room. They moved through the first three positions. Next was demi-pliés in each of the first three positions.

Second Position for my son is not as…uh…let’s just say he’s no danseur noble. His toes point slightly forward - not straight out. His Second Position, in fact, is largely indistinguishable from a good, wide Powerlifting Squat stance. And his demi-pliés look a lot more like squats than pliés. He breaks at the hips first, he puts his weight back on his heels, leans forward just a bit with a big expanded chest. He goes a little deeper than he should and he sticks his belly out between his thighs.

His daddy’s proud, even if his ballet instructor isn’t. =)

Birthday Party

Saturday afternoon we went to the 5th birthday party of a little girl with whom my little girl is friends. Her dad, we’ll call him “M”.

When M was young (9, 10, 11?) his mom left his dad for a woman. M’s mom and this woman are still together today. M is a nice enough guy, but he’s not the most enlightened man in the world when it comes to this sort of thing. He’s not at all comfortable with the idea of a woman being with another woman, and triply-so regarding his own mother.

M’s mom showed up to this party and brought her lady-friend (girlfriend?, life-partner?…I didn’t ask for her preferred nomenclature). It made M most uncomfortable. #1, he thinks there is shame in his mother having a girlfriend. #2, he thinks there is some shame in his mother leaving his father. #3, he projected that shame onto himself - like those were HIS choices.

I could see it was really messing with him. His friends were there, his wife’s family was there; and there was his mother’s girlfriend. He left the party early and abruptly. He literally couldn’t stand to be around. We were all in the backyard. He poked his head out the back door in the middle of the party, hollered, “I’m leaving. See you all later.” got in his truck and drove away.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this. It was just a very bizarre thing to experience and I want to keep it spinning around in my mind for a while.

Sunday

Sunday was a beautiful day here. It was about 66°F and slightly overcast. Perfect. I got a little computer work done in the morning and then the family all got dressed and we walked up to the local Farmer’s Market. We bought some green beans, a cantaloupe, some baby red potatoes and strawberries.

It’s a little early for all the booths and stalls to be open, but it’s good to see the first bunches of produce - onions, beans, greens, early potatoes - the first signs of spring.

We walked around downtown for a while, counted the coal cars on a train that went slowly by, then went and found some lunch. Then it was back home for naps and some more computer work. We had some chicken with those green beans and potatoes for dinner and some of those strawberries for dessert.

It was a good weekend.
