This weekend my wife and children and I went to the birthday party of a little boy - friend of our family’s. The little boy’s mother and my wife are friends. The little boy’s sister and my daughter are friends. The little boy and my son are friends. The little boy turned three on Saturday.

The little boy’s mother and father are getting a divorce. It’s certainly not the messiest divorce I’ve ever heard of, but it’s not entirely amicable either.

It was a small gathering. There was the little boy, of course; his mother and sister; and us. The little boy’s maternal grandparents were there as well.

And his dad - the soon-to-be-divorcee - showed up.

This is the first time I have seen him since I learned of their divorce. We have always been friendly, but not friends - friendly acquaintences. His soon-to-be-ex in-laws were not quite cold, but certainly cool to his presence. I tried to maintain some sense of normal conversation - asked him how his job was and chatted a bit about baseball - but he was well out of his comfort zone and not much interested in idle chit-chat.

At some point he simply disappeared. I don’t believe he said good bye to anyone (if so, he was stealth about it) and he was gone.

I’m notoriously bad at that sorta thing. I have no idea how to deal with that kind of social interaction.

My elbow is still bothering me. I’ve tried to significantly rest the pulling motion, but it seems to be getting worse, not better. That’s no good at all.
